The group will be marking the occasion with these candles from now until September 11, 2011.

According to Gittens, it will take 13 sessions to create 2,977 candles, each 13 inch and white tapered candles. A candle will be offered for each victim who was killed in the World Trade Center in New York City, Pentagon in Washington DC and in the field in Shanksville in Pennsylvania.

However, Gittens, the owner of the Valley Enterprises in Levittown, isn’t sure if they’ll have a candle light vigil on the night before or if they’ll just be handing the candles to the visitors on 9/11 after the ceremony.

This special ceremony, planned for September 11 to mark its 10^th anniversary will be held at the Garden of Reflection, the official state memorial located at the Woodside Road in Lower Makefield.

Volunteers Jennifer Wire, John and Stephanie Lisle and their children Julian and Ava were the first to make the candles under Glittens’ supervision. Other volunteers include Ellen Saracini whose husband had been the pilot of the 2^nd plane to fly into the World Trade Center. Saracini and other wives and mothers of Bucks County victims were all participants in raising funds for the Garden of Reflection.

Skip Gittens hopes to finish the candle project by mid-August, advanced by days before the 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

The county will also be celebrating with a quilter’s event.

And everyone’s invited! The annual quilter’s celebration will start at early 9am and end at 3pm on the 4^th of June. Their location will be at the First Presbyterian Church on 8^th and Morris.

The free event and celebration will feature quilting and sewing demonstrations that will begin at 9am until noon where a potluck meal will be served for lunch. In the afternoon, a quilting fee will be held, although a little old fashioned, but it will include hand quilting as well as storytelling.

Demonstrations will have topics such as bag from tea towels, decorating teal towels, making dog pillow cases for only 10 minutes, wagon wheel table runners, animal food bag totes, quilts that are made out of half square triangles and 3 strip log cabins and scarves.

Prizes may be given out during the day and there will also be a sale for quilting interests.

The Merrill Gardens Annual Art Show is being sponsored by the Kirkland Senior Council this June along with the Merrill Gardens.

This art show features multiple art including paintings, sculptures, photography, quilting and any other kinds of art created by local seniors starting on June 10.

Merrill Gardens will be hosting a reception for artists with live jazz music from the Ev Stern Trip at 6pm to 8pm, also on June 10 along with the second Friday Art Walk.

The art show will still be open for people to view at the Merrill Gardens lobby without any admission fees at 9am to 7pm all throughout June 19 at 301 Kirkland Ave.

The arts have always been a great way to let out emotions or paint feelings and keep someone entertained. Seniors can still have this and who knows the kind of art they can make with the many years they’ve lived. With more inspiration, definitely comes more talent and wider audience.

Christmas Quilt

Not only that, the quilt is so pretty that it won first place in the County Fair.

Raffle tickets cost $1 and $5 for 6 tickets. The program director of The Resource Connection Food Bank, Jeannie Hayward is excited about their creative fundraising this year.

The community based non-profit organization, The Resource Connection, was established in 1980 to help families and children and hold programs that promote nutrition, prevention and intervention for the people of Amador and Calaveras.

With about 150 members, the Resource Connection has a dedicated set of staff whose mission is “Engaging Families, Empowering Communities and Enriching Lives”.

The club, began in 1988 by the late Helen Hidek who was a Charleroi and Dunlevy native.

The 45 members meet at the Mon Valley YMCA, the club’s major sponsor, each month and the ladies take their club to help other people with their lives by their creations.

The ladies have made lap robes for the patients of the Pittsburgh veterans hospital, pillowcases, dignity robes for patients of Magee Women’s Hospital who are suffering from cancer, knitted wool helmet liners for army members and quilts for children and newborns.

These ladies willingly spend their time making creative products and aims to give others as much as they can. However, when asked what they like to give themselves, members Mildred Carey, Janet Hamer and Camelia Orr all answered that they do quilting.

The Supper Quilt

Make sure not to miss the event because the show is also to feature a masterpiece by Dr. Donald E. Locke called the Supper Quilt. This special quilt, as stated by its name is derived from the concept of The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci that was painted on the Dominican Cloister wall in Milan, Italy during the 1940s.

A former dentist, Locke was able to finish the quilt after 2 and ½ years of work in 1999.

To help with the making of the Supper Quilt, a picture of the Last Supper was enlarged until enough pixel blocks appeared that eventually became the template to help Locke with the fabric needed.

The fabric was then cut and placed in baggies and arranged by color. 1 inch squares of fabric was used to create the large part of the quilt. These squares were numbered and then with the use of a Singer featherweight sewing machine, Locke put together his masterpiece.

Along with the Supper Quilt, there will also be 200 other quilts created by some people from the community. There will also be vendors of quilting supplies during the event as well as demonstrations, auctions and workshops.

Marcia Jeffers will hold daily workshops at 1.30pm and at 2.30pm Linda Ringley will be instructing. Participants will be served lunch on Friday and Saturday which includes chicken salad, vegetable soup and homemade treats for desserts.

The 24 quilts, called Pushing the Surface will run until August 7.

It’s been a long time since quilts were just known to be covers and accessories for beds. Today, these quilts can be made of any size, any shape and be of any design. The pieces may be created by painting, dying or laser printing, appliquéd or even fused. With the so many quilt techniques possible, talented designers have a wide range of original ideas to put into their quilts.

Participants of the show are artists brought along all over the USA and some are from Israel, Canada and Japan. Many of the artists are known internationally and some have had their quilts featured in books or periodicals as well as travel exhibitions. These artists comment on society or their environment by the use of quilting. They can either reveal a memory or explore the many new technologies to create a beautiful quilt.

Some artists include John Lefelhocz of Athens, Barbara Watler and Noriko Endo.

The biennial exhibit is sponsored by the family of Mary F. Taylor and Dixie Fishbaugh.

The Boot

The quilt is made up of 5 army uniforms that come out of several decades.

Ott had served two decades or more in the Army and retired only in 1996 as a major. It took her 150 hours to work on the quilt that she gave to Zeke Radtke, a mechanic in the Army Reserve, boyfriend of her daughter, as a Christmas present.

Later in the month, she also plans to join a contest in Mukwonago with her camouflage quilt.

It was pretty lucky then, that Ott did not throw away her uniforms and are still complete from her powder blue slacks, green fatigues and her tops that she used in the Women’s Army Corps in 1973. She also served in Signal Corps in Germany and Fort Riley.

Aside from her uniforms, she also enlisted her daughter’s support by getting Radtke’s patches, name tags and insignia to complete her quilt.

Ott began creating quilts in 1997 and has since then made about 30 – 40 quilts. She began by using a Pfaff sewing machine and recently upgraded to a Janome Memory Craft 6600.
